You've got questions, we've got answers.

Learn all the material as best you can. Then take one mock exam. Then contact me. That first exam gives us a baseline for your knowledge and test-taking skills. As we talk through your incorrect answers, I will train you to “think like the exam.” You will start to see how the exam works. And it’s best to get tutoring early so you don’t entrench bad habits.
I avoid the typical exam-prep nonsense about the exam being too hard, too much, too long. No voluntary disempowerment here! Yes, we address your vulnerabilities, sources of anxiety or depression, and any other emotional, cognitive, or logistical obstacles that you are experiencing. And then we overcome them immediately with pragmatic, down-to-earth, and easy-to-activate logic and skill.

“I got this!” isn’t enough.

Schedule a tutoring session right away. (And consider moving your exam at least a week or so.)

I will give you an honest assessment of whether you are ready. If you aren’t strong enough in the knowledge, are so anxious that you can’t think straight, and/or you are just sick of studying and are rushing into the exam — these and many others are good reasons to delay your exam, and learn solid test-taking strategies.

Your scores, time-management, and ability to think logically are the best measures of readiness.

You might have been told to use your intuition or your real-life client experience. You might be reading too quickly and missing important concepts. Or, you might be reading too slowly and obsessively and getting bogged down. You might have assumed that if you memorized all the terms and concepts you were prepared. You may have “felt” ready but feelings don’t always cut it. Don’t worry – all are fixable!

Whether you just failed, or failed last year, or you’ve taken the exam more times than you care to think about, that’s all in the past. Start here with a completely different set of tools.

Average 3-4 months. You need at least a month to learn the material. You need another month to take a mock exam or two, learn strategies and internalize them, fill in any knowledge gaps, and then take the rest of the mocks.

Of course real life can interfere, so if you don’t have to put yourself on a tight time frame, don’t.

Timing is not as important as success. Speed is not as important as precision.

We will review your incorrect answers from a mock exam. Identify where your thinking style doesn’t match the logic of the exam, and turn you into a logical, competent and efficient test-taker.

We can also take a mock exam together in real-time. That is a good way for me to notice what is getting in your way and redirect you so that you (not me!) own your process.

I will also do my best to change your mind about all the obstacles you perceive. We’ll erode the negative self-talk and replace it with powerful, effective, skill-based action.

I introduce you to my test-taking methods, and then you take a hard-copy mock exam. That hard copy is yours to take home and mark up and/or take again.

After you take the exam, we discuss all things exam-related:

Skill
Logic
Anxiety
Pragmatism
Loss of confidence and clarity
Time-management
Fortitude
Peer support and feedback

Even some psychospiritual and mindfulness (!) tips for how to center yourself, relocate your power and peace, and be the best “you” that you may have lost in this process.

Option 1: Unless you have a deadline due to your associate number, your job, or other life demands, I advise people to prepare first, and pick a date later. Having an exam date can add pressure, which can make it hard to internalize how to take the exam effectively.

Option 2: Some people need a deadline in order to get motivated. If that is you, pick a date about three (3) months away from when you start studying and you can always move it if necessary.

Know this: When you take the time to learn the content, and then take a disciplined approach to learning test-taking skills, you will know when the time is right. Or I will. I can give you my feedback on choosing your exam date so you don’t set yourself up to have to take it again. Delays cost current and potential income, so don’t volunteer for those either!

Take a break and give your brain a chance to re-set. Come to one of my classes or a tutoring session and learn how to take the exam in a different way than you have before. DO NOT give up or surrender your desire for success to the exam board. They don’t deserve it.
The exam is a baseline competence measure to make sure that mental health professionals entering the field have a minimum of knowledge and ability. Standardized tests are by definition “tricky” because they have a logic of their own. But just because it feels tricky doesn’t mean you have to be uncertain. I’ll teach you how to not feel tricked!
